Week of March 24 – 28

English

This week in English was a nice exploration of advertising techniques and how advertisers try to create emotional responses to urge product purchase. They found it very informative, and hopefully it will make them more savvy consumers. Next week begins the Advocating for Change unit that will last for the remainder of the school year. Students will be told their topics and they will begin to investigate it through research. The goal is that by the end of the week, they will have a well developed research questions to focus their efforts around.

Math

This week there was an assessment on functions, taking the MAP math test, and a review day for the upcoming basic skills assessment on Thursday or Friday of next week depending on block. Posted below are some review materials for the test with answers to check. Next week, student will be moving on to the next unit that focuses on using Pythagoras Theorem.

 

 

Social Studies

Students were busy updating and giving their speeches this week. Next week they will finish up giving their speeches and begin the Advocating for Change unit along with English. The multidisciplinary unit will be taught in both classes, with social studies class guiding most of the research. They will do research to help develop a research question for the unit. Also, next week are the political party elections. All of grade 8 will come together and hear the party leader speeches and then vote for the party with the most compelling platform. Should be fun!

Science

In Mr. Pasamba’s class, students began to build their rescue machines for the next performance task. They will need to build a machine to accomplish a specific task using simple machines. They will then calculate the mechanical advantage of the machine to finish the task. Their machines will need to be built by the end of next week. Students need to remember to bring in any building materials they need.

In Dr. Lacson’s class, students have been learning about the different ecosystems and were required to bring in a 1.5L clear bottle to build their self-contained ecosystem. Over the next couple weeks they will observe their ecosystems as they grow and change. They will keep detailed logs and measurements to draw conclusions at the end of the unit.

Week of March 17 – 21

Math

This week was spent practicing for the assessment on Monday the 24th. Below are some practice materials for the assessment. We will also have a basic skills assessment on April 4th. Review materials are also posted below. The next unit is on Pythagoras Theorem or A squared + B squared = C squared. We will explore how this theorem was developed and its applications.

English

We were finishing up our propaganda posters this week, and they are due today by 3pm for Mr. Burke, but Ms. Shull’s B and G blocks are not due until Tuesday. Most of the three periods this week were spent working on the posters and paragraphs. Below is the graphic organizer for the paragraph with example. This was provided to students this week in SI class. Next week we will be looking at advertising and the overlap of propaganda and advertising techniques. We will also learn about logo design and the messages that are sometimes hidden in company logos.

Social Studies

Students finished off the research to write their Minister speeches and had time in class to write the speeches. They are due tonight by 10pm for Ms. Villanueva and on Monday March 24th for Ms. Shull. In a separate post here, I provided some sentence frames to help structure the speeches. Not every sentence in the document needs to be completed. They are there to give students an idea of how to structure a strong persuasive speech. Students will be giving their speeches next week. We will take some time at the beginning of next week to practice the speeches in SI class. After the political party elections next week, students will pick their topics for the Advocating for Change unit that will last all of fourth quarter.

Science

In Dr. Lacson’s class students spent time doing the calculations of the mechanical advantage, work and power of their rescue machines. The final poster for the groups with all of the diagrams and calculations is due Tuesday March 25th. They will also need to bring in 1.5 liter clear water/soda bottles to start the next unit on ecology. They will use those bottles to build a self-contained ecosystem.

In Mr. Pasamba’s class students have been working on finishing up a lab report for the performance task on building the perfect swing set. They needed to use the data from the lab to create an Excel spreadsheet that projects the perfect swing speed by adjusting the length of the chain. This lab report is due today in Google docs. Next week they will be learning about simple machines and how to calculate the mechanical advantage.

 

Week of March 10 – 14

Math

Happy Pi Day! This week we finished up learning the concepts for the functions unit part 2. Now that we have learned all of the concepts it is time to assess what students have learned. The assessment will be on Monday March 24th. Next week will be spent reviewing the concepts and practicing. Below is a practice sheet for the skills needed on the assessment. We will also be giving a basic skills test shortly after the functions assessment. A review for that is posted below too.

 

 

English

We have been learning about propaganda techniques this week and will begin crafting a propaganda poster using some of those techniques next week. It will be due Friday March 21st. Along with the poster is an expository paragraph that explains the poster and its techniques. Below is the assignment sheet with poster requirements and an example of how to write that paragraph using a provided organizer.

 

 

Social Studies

This week in classes students were assigned to a political group based on a survey that placed them on a continuum from liberal to conservative. The political parties are now forming their platforms by researching different social and political issues with the goal of developing solutions agreed upon by the other members. Each group member plays the role of either Party Leader, Minister of the Environment, Minister of Health,  Minister of Economics, or Minister of Social Issues. Each member will develop a speech based on their research on a specific issue and the solutions they devise. To help with the research that needs to be done on virtual note cards in NoodleTools, Mr. Hamlin has provided links to find the needed information here. From those note cards they will need to create their speeches. Here is a link to an example speech with comments that got an exemplary grade last year. This can be very helpful in seeing the end product while still doing research and gathering ideas. Most students are expected to have the first body paragraph completed by Monday March 17th! The final draft will be due Friday March 21st by 8pm on the site Turnitin.com.

Science

In Dr. Lacson’s class students this week worked on a performance task building rescue machines using simple machines as the basis. They have completed building and testing their machines. They now have to make calculations on the work and mechanical advantage of their rescue machines. Next week they will make a poster for their machines with diagrams and the included calculations. Posters will be due end of next week.

In Mr. Pasamba’s class students worked on a performance task to find the perfect swing set swing speed by adjusting different variables. They completed their investigation lab and now have to report their results using a graph to show the perfect swing speed. They have their data and it needs to be input into Excel. From there they will use the software to calculate the appropriate chain length to achieve the perfect swing speed. The final write on that lab will be due end of next week.
